Help Us Raise $5 Million to Fund the Breakthroughs!

The Fund the Breakthroughs Challenge runs October 5 – 14 and aims to raise $5 million for American Cancer Society research through Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Building on lessons learned from the 2020 Fall Fundraising challenge, we are excited to launch a unique and time sensitive opportunity for Making Strides and Relay For Life participants to support – the $5M Fund the Breakthroughs Challenge (Oct. 5 – 14, 2021). The challenge puts a mission theme at the heart of the campaign and builds excitement around directly funding ACS research in precision medicine. In addition, fundraisers will earn double Rewards points during this time period.

We’ve built a few pages here on Relay Connect that will help you understanding what the challenge is, what it funds, and what you can do. We hope you’ll use these to become experts on the challenge!

  • – use the page to read about the research we are funding, rules of the double points, and to see a leaderboard once the campaign starts.  This is a great page to share with team captains to help them explain the restricted funding to research during this time. This same page is also be available at both and
  • – ELTs and Committees can use this page to understand what they can do to help promote this challenge and the timeline of national communication.  We’ll also be updating it soon with graphics that you can use to post on local social media and content for EMC emails for you to use.
  • – Fundraisers Karen Woldahl and Joe Gillette are hosting Episode 4 of their Fundraising: Outside the Box this Thursday, Sept 19 @ 9pm EST. Watch live at or you can watch a replay later on youtube.  Karen & Joe are joined by American Cancer Society’s Senior Scientific Director, Dr. Lynne Elmore to talk about how the funds raised during the October Fund the Breakthroughs Challenge will be used. Though this video is hosted on the Relay Community – the content is great for MSABC too!

The Relay For Life movement is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser dedicated to helping communities attack cancer. From team members to volunteers, we all want to remember those we’ve lost, help those affected today, and take action against cancer. Through funds donated, time given, or awareness raised, our communities are teaming up to make a difference, whether we’re connecting virtually or sharing space. When we rally together in the fight against cancer through this fun and inspirational event, we can accomplish anything.
